CLEANING LIONFISH
It's easy to prepare freshly caught lionfish!
If you did not remove the spines underwater after capture, you can use a fillet knife or heavy duty scissors to remove the fins and spines. New to cleaning fish? You may also want to use gloves to keep your hands clean and prevent them from smelling like fish! 1. Hold lionfish firmly. 2. Remove dorsal spines by cutting into the flesh along each side of the row of spines moving towards the tail. After loosening the spines, remove them completely. 3. Remove the anal and pelvic spines by cutting from the base. 4. Once the spines are removed, the lionfish can be prepared like any other fish. |
CAUTION:
#1 If the fish are freshly captured the spines can still contain venom so be careful to not come in contact with the tips of the spines. #2 The head and gill plate of the lionfish have sharp projections, so gloves can be worn to minimize abrasions while cleaning lionfish |
DONATE THE FINS!
If you regularly catch and clean lionfish, be sure to donate your lionfish fins to one of the local artists that make jewelry from the decorative spines! A list of jewelers will be presented before the end of this course.
