RANGE OF LIONFISH

The focus of much attention in many Caribbean nations during the past 10 years has been lionfish.  There are 12 species of lionfish of the genus Pterois in their native range, of which two have become invasive in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.  They are all members of the Family Scorpaenidae, whose other members include the Scorpionfish or Poison Grouper, as they are known locally. The red lionfish, Pterois volitans, is primarily found in the Pacific Ocean, while the devil firefish, Pterois miles, is found in the Indian Ocean.
