When culling lionfish there are a couple of important considerations to remember:
1. Protect yourself and avoid getting punctured by the lionfish spine.
2. Protect the reef and be mindful not touch, kick, or spear coral or kick up the sediment.

When a lionfish is observed, approach slowly and calmly to avoid scaring it into a crevice. Be aware of your breathing and avoid making excess bubbles and noise. It may be possible to come very close to the lionfish, possibly ‘tickling’ it with your spear. Some local fishermen catch lionfish using hook sticks this way, but since the lionfish are not secured properly it may be easier to get stung by the spines and is not recommended. Kill shot, but not a guaranteed strike
Almost a guarantee, but you may ruin fillet if being sold! Larger fish have armor that the spear won’t penetrate, and also a gill plate. Spear may penetrate guts and won't be able to identify contents - if you are studying lionfish diet. |
