SECTION III         FEEDING         PREY        PREDATORS     QUIZ 3

PREY

In the Indo-Pacific, lionfish are generalist and opportunist predators, meaning they eat whatever they can get and whenever they can get it.

Lionfish in the Atlantic consume far more prey than in their native range because of this programmed feeding behavior. They prey on small fish, shrimps, crabs and similarly sized animals. Cannibalism has also been observed for this species.  Most abundantly found prey in lionfish stomachs include:
  • damselfish
  • gobies
  • sand divers
  • jawfish
  • groupers
  • wrasse
  • parrotfish
  • shrimp
  • crabs
