EUTHANIZATION TECHNIQUES

1. Euthanization should be carried out as soon as possible to prevent unnecessary distress to the Lionfish.
2. Make up a 50ml/1.7 fluid ounces mixture which is 1 part Clove Oil to 10 parts rubbing alcohol. 
3. Mixture can then be diluted in 11-15 litres/3-4 gallons of seawater and then the Lionfish are placed inside for at least 10 minutes.
4. Dispose of the mixture carefully once Lionfish are euthanized.
5. As the spines remain venomous up to 8 hours post death, it is important to dispose of the Lionfish bodies with care to avoid accidental envenomation.
6. Where Lionfish are to be consumed, place in a chest of ice for at least 10 minutes.
